Sketching Lunch First Fridays - Monthly

Join us on the First Friday of each month and visit the beautiful Ventura Harbor to sketch! Come for the cool ocean breezes, and bring your lunch (or pick up something in the Village) and hangout on the second floor terrace next to Buenaventura Art Association, with the folks from Plein Air Ventura County.

You are welcome to sketch outside along the promenade or terrace, or be inside with the comfy heat. You are welcome to bring whatever you are working on.

Please keep your setup unscented as much as possible (certain oil paint mediums and perfumes are too much for indoors.)

Please consider making a donation to help keep the doors open to this amazing gathering space at the harbor.

Hope to see you there! It's so fun creating art together.

[Restroom available. There is a charge for parking. Be sure to visit the kiosk by Le Petit. $1/hr for first four hours, then $10/day]

Besides parking, this is a free get-together. No need to RSVP, just come!

Dates: Feb. 6, March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5 and onward!

This Master Workshop synthesizes the core principles of value structure, compositional design, and color harmony from The Painter’s Toolkit curriculum, applying them within the expressive possibilities of watercolor. Emphasis is placed on strong underlying design, confident value control, and allowing the medium’s natural flow to enhance rather than obscure intention.

Students learn to balance structure and spontaneity—using watercolor as a responsive partner in the painting process.

Workshop #4 Composition, Value, & Color: Design as the Foundation
    with Beverly Lazor
Saturday, June 6 - extended hours: 10:00 to 4:00 with break

This Integrative Workshop serves as the capstone experience of The Painter’s Toolkit. The workshop emphasizes composition and value as the primary drivers of successful painting, with color introduced only after strong structural decisions are established.

Students work through a disciplined, sequential process —thumbnail  notan  drawing  value  color — to create paintings that are clear, intentional, and unified. The focus is not on style or novelty, but on making fewer, stronger decisions and learning to edit ruthlessly in service of design.
