    Painting the Santa Clara Estuary
    with Gabriel Islas

Cole Creativity Center's popular teaching artist, Gabriel Islas, will lead students in painting the Santa Clara Estuary. This is an in-studio class. Gabriel inspires students to interpret the photo reference creatively, making informed choices grounded in color theory, atmospheric perspective, and application techniques.

Before starting the final piece on a larger canvas, students will practice these concepts through a 'color study'. Gabriel will demonstrate the entire process from start to finish while providing valuable feedback and encouragement along the way.

This is a link to an online list of materials that Gabriel uses and recommends in general: Gabriel's Plein Air Materials List. Students must provide their own materials.

Capture Local Color with Durre Waseem
A Plein Air workshop with an international master!

Known for her vibrant, impressionistic brushwork, this workshop with Durre Waseem is a rare and special opportunity for artists.

Durre is a master at capturing the moment in vibrant color using, as she says,  her "understanding of seeing and omitting."  She often includes figures within the landscape, saying "I only take charge of selecting a subject and my painting leads me through the process."

Durre is adept at many mediums as she will demonstrate in this two-day plus optional third day workshop, conducting the  first day in oil and the second in watercolor.  Please note that while Durre will switch mediums, you don't have  to!  Students are invited to choose whichever medium they are comfortable  with for both days. The fundamentals of creating a successful painting are the same in any medium, so prepare to learn great volumes while you watch Durre wield different kinds of paint in the most mesmerizing ways!

Her demos will highlight her approach to design, and how she paves a path for the viewer’s eye while you paint along. She will start by simplifying shapes and organizing values, making marks for the darkest emphasis and the lightest accents. The optional third day will give you time to keep painting and/or tidy up your painting(s) under Durre's watchful eye and will end with some critique and discussion on the results.

A native of Pakistan, Durre has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Punjab University and taught for 10 years at various colleges in Pakistan. She moved to the United States in 2001 and became a full time painter. She travels extensively for teaching in the U.S. and attends countless plein air events which garner her many awards. She paints portraits and plein air in oils, pastels, watercolor, ink, and acrylics and captures the local color of both the people and the place of wherever she may be.

Three days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, November 3, 4, and 5
We will meet at the Buenaventura Art Center the first day but quickly move outdoors for painting in oils. The second day, Durre will demonstrate with watercolors indoors. The third, optional day will start outdoors but will move indoors for discussion and critiques.

Times: 9:30am to 3:30pm all days

Fee: $295 for two days and $150 for the 3rd day. (The third day is only available for those who have signed up for the first two days.)

Materials: Durre says, "I am very flexible in the brush sizes and color choices. You can use the materials you are comfortable with. However, some prefer a supply list, which you can find here: Durre Waseem Materials update.pdf.

    Sumi Painting & Japanese Calligraphy
    with Keiko Horrock

Sumi painting, also known as sumi-e or ink wash painting, is a traditional East Asian art form that uses black ink in various concentrations to create expressive, minimalist images. It emphasizes simplicity, harmony, and the beauty of brushstrokes.

In traditional sumi painting, the painting is frequently

accompanied by calligraphy, which might include a poem or phrase, the title of the work or a short thought expressing the artist’s intention, or the artist’s signature or seal (hanko) in red ink, balancing the composition.

The calligraphy is not just an addition but part of the artwork’s harmony—its brushstrokes share the same rhythm, spirit, and expressive quality as the painted image. Together, painting and writing create a unified work that blends visual beauty with meaning.

Artist/teacher Keiko Horrock, a frequent instructor of calligraphy with the City of Ventura's recreation department, will lead you on your own journey of beauty and meaning by teaching the essence of sumi painting and the three variations of Japanese calligraphy, called Kaisho (block style), Gyosho (semi-cursive style), and Sosho (cursive or grass style).
